Successful pop artist known for his bold, two- and three-dimensional images of American flags. He was often classified as a Neo-Dadaist artist. His best-known painting was “Flag” from 1954 to 1955 and was based on a dream.
He was a student for three semesters at the University of South Carolina from 1947 until 1948. He had a brief stint with the Parsons School of Design in 1949. He fought in the Korean War from 1952 until 1953, being stationed in Sendai, Japan.
He also gained note for his sculpting, especially his double-sided relief from 2009, ‘Fragments of a Letter,’ which incorporated a letter Vincent van Gogh had written to the artist, Émile Bernard.
He claimed to have grown up in an environment devoid of art. He met Robert Rauschenberg in 1954, and the two became long-term lovers.
He and Andy Warhol were both classified as pop artists.
