Alexandre Dumas

19th-century French author who wrote adventure novels with historical elements, including The Three Musketeers, The Man in the Iron Mask, and The Count of Monte Cristo. His other works include the Sainte-Hermine Trilogy and a series of romantic novels about Marie Antoinette.

After moving to Paris, he wrote his first play, Henry III and His Courts, which received much acclaim upon its opening. Early in his career, he also collaborated with literary friends on a multi-volume collection of true crime-themed essays.

All of his major works have been adapted into films.

He married Ida Ferrier in 1840. His famous son, Alexandre Dumas, fils became a popular French author and playwright whose melodrama, Camille, was particularly famous in its day.

Sean Connery plays the main character in the film adaptation of Dumas’ novel, The Count of Monte Cristo.
